The film has a release date of March 28, 2014.

Iko Uwais will reprise his role as Rama. In addition, the film stars Alex Abbad, Julie Estelle, Tio Pakusadewo, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, and Cecep A. Rahman. Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi Endo and Kazuki Kitamura are also joining the film.

Development

Following Merantau, Gareth Evans and his producers began to work on a movie project called Berandal (which is Indonesian for "thugs"), a large-scale prison gang movie intended to star not onlyMerantau actors Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Donny Alamsyah reprise his role, but also an additional pair of international fight stars. A teaser trailer was shot, but the project proved to be more complex and time consuming than they had anticipated.[7] After a year and a half, Evans and the producers found themselves with insufficient funds to produce Berandal, so they changed to a simpler, but different story with a smaller budget. They called the project Serbuan Maut (The Raid).[8]

While developing The Raid in script form, Evans considered the idea of creating a link between it and the initial project, Berandal. It was later confirmed that Berandal will serve as a sequel to The Raid.[9][10] Evans has also stated his intention to make it a trilogy.[11]

Sony has purchased the film for U.S., Latin American and Spanish markets. Alliance/Momentum has purchased the film for the United Kingdom and Canada; Koch Media has acquired the film for German speaking territories; Korea Screen has purchased the film for the Korean market; and HGC has acquired the film for China. Deals for other major territories are currently under negotiation.[12]

Titled as "The Raid 2" announced for the U.S. market, the sequel will have a “significantly larger” budget than its predecessor, and its production schedule will take approximately 100 days.[13]The pre-production is expected to begin in September 2012 while the filming is expected in January 2013.[14][15]
